This is a poem by 17th century Alevi asik bard Karacaoğlan, who lived around 1606-1680 near Mersin in the south of present-day Turkey. In this song the poet has fallen for the hazel eyes of a beauty and pleads “do not kill me before my death”. In Turkey the prolific output of Karacaoğlan is compared to Shakespeare and love and death feature strongly. The pulsing rhythm and breathy ney flute reference Sufi music, where earthly love points to love for the divine.

The music is by Olcay and it is arranged and produced by Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist Deniz Mahir Kartal.

Ela gözlerine kurban olduğum
Şayedip aleme bildirme beni
Açıp ak gerdanı durma karşımda`
Ecelimden evvel öldürme beni

Dilber at kolların dola boynuma
