Lost Child is a vision of a child’s loneliness. It’s a vision that could apply to young people the world over, from Syrian refugee children walking amongst destroyed homes, to victims of abuse, or to children scared for their future in the uncertainty of the global pandemic. The song is close to hopelessness - “I am a bird without a path / Never knew freedom / never flew in her own sky / They broke my wings; never know if ever my hands will reach to the rainbow” - but ends with the child finding an inner anger and resilience to combat the despair. “Who can give me my future? Take your dirty hands off from my hope and dreams.” The child challenges us to question our responsibilities and actions and to consider the kind of world we must leave to our children and those we love. In the arrangement by Al MacSween a faltering heartbeat pulses; a tentative melody on the sweet duduk reed flute played tells us that human feelings are still alive if hidden. The child's finds strength in anger "Who can give me my future? Take your dirty hands off from my hope and dreams."
